The So-called “Jamaicans and West Indians”: The Wolf
Benjamin along with his brethren, Judah and Levi, can be found in high number in West Africa. They are described by their father Jacob as having the spirit of a wolf. Wolves are known for howling at the moon, similar to the way that the so-called West Indian sings songs Zion towards the heavens. This also describes the sometimes rapacious spirit that Benjamin carries. Under the Maroons, Benjamin would overtake the slave ships and turn them back towards the coast of West Africa. They would then take the resources found on this ships and divide the spoils amongst one another. The Bible also makes mention of the blessed land in which Benjamin dwells, stating, “The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him; and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders”.
